I Was SCAMMED (almost) By An AI Artist…
Okay, first and foremost, calling someone an “AI Artist” is completely absurd because they do anything BUT being an artist…but…I don’t know what else to call them.
So here’s what happened.
I was in Hawaii this week on a business trip with a client and had some down time. I started working on the SUPER PLUMBER SISTERS #4 campaign, and was like…
“You know…maybe when I do the Trade Paperback version, and I can have a DELUXE version and it’s in color and limited to just this campaign!”
So! I started looking for colorists to work with that were in the budget I could afford, and also the style.
Well I came across one person and they were like:
“Heck yeah I can do this for you! In fact, to prove how amazing I am I’ll color a page for FREE for you!”
So naturally I was like “okay sounds good” and sent him a sample page from SUPER PLUMBER SISTERS #1.
LITERALLY IN 5 MINUTES he messages me back saying that the page was finished and that it turned out perfectly, professionally, and EXACTLY how I had described it to him.
So obviously I asked: “Can I see it?”
In which case he said that because of how well the page turned out, he felt that because of the work that he had put in (all 5 minutes) he deserved a page payment based on what we had agreed upon. I told him that once I saw the page I’d be happy to pay for it.
That didn’t fly.
He demanded that I send over money immediately or he wouldn’t share me the art.
Obviously this left a really sour taste in my mouth. I told him I was done and that I would find another artist for this 160-page project.
Now he was trying to play ball.
“Well actually, here’s what I can do…”
False. You don’t get to make any demands now buddy.
After a bunch of attempts from him trying to get me to pay, he eventually caved in and THIS is what he sent me! I put the original line art next to it to compare.
It was done by AI! The figures are all completely off, some of the coloring is “kinda good” but not. It was completely whack.
I told him I wasn’t interested.
He tried to say “well I’m going to publish this page as my own.”
I was like “Go for it buddy…no one is going to be impressed by that colored page at all.”
Man.
Anyways.
I think we’re going to see a lot more of these “AI Artists” coming in trying to pass their stuff off as their own work.

DARE TO HIT RECORD…
A big thing for me lately has been the struggle to create content, especially on my DRAW AND TALK Channel. I’m constantly battling with this desire to have a strategy and to get views and grow, but also just wanting to say what I want, how I want, and that’s it.
I have another channel that I’m growing that talks about manga, and that’s doing well thanks to the help of my friend Animaine who is constantly pushing me.
But even then, I’m constantly doubting myself and the ability to create content. And it’s nuts because I literally direct and create content ALL DAY EVERY DAY for clients to drive sales for them.
This is my freaking day job, and yet when it comes to my stuff I just can’t wrap my head around it because of how personal it all feels.
I don’t know.
Basically, what I’m trying to say to anyone who is reading this…
Just do what I did this week while in Hawaii and just hit the record button and then post. Seriously. That’s all I did. I set up a camera, hit record, said what I wanted and what I was feeling, and then I just posted.
No edits. No overthinking.
I just hit record.
And that’s honestly the best place to start…
Just hit record.
Just do the thing, and keep doing the thing.

Trying to charge for a service and NOT revealing HOW it is done is completely unacceptable to me.. AND HE KNEW IT WAS BAD, because he hid it! Even if you remove ai from the story, and he was just a shoddy/unskilled colorist, he’s still sooooooooooooo wrong. Seemingly a con man, super shady, and terrible at business!
I hope he changes, because he won’t get far like that.
And the last section, is something I think about often. It’ll take some work..
But it’s time.
